Sewing is one of my passions. I was lucky enough to be introduced to sewing in school- back when sewing was routinely offered- and that experience cemented not only a life-long skill but also sparked a creative outlet. While I sewed occasionally, Halloween costumes, home-dec items, maternity clothes, it wasn’t until I left my successful banking career to become a stay-at-home Mom that my love of sewing really took off. I delighted in making one-of-a kind adorable outfits for my little girl. As my confidence and skill grew I sewed for my young son and eventually myself. One of the best decisions I ever made was, in 2000, joining the American Sewing Guild, Gold Country/Placerville Chapter. Through that association I was introduced to other talented sewists and my eyes were opened to a world of creative possibilities. I proudly served as a board member for 6 years including as Chapter President for two years. I am one of the founding teacher/mentors (2003) of the ASG Teen sewing program that was offered through the chapter for eight years.
One of the inevitable consequences of having a skill that most people need at some time, but few possess, is that I started getting requests to sew for other people. So in 2007 I started saying, “Sure, I can do that.” when people needed a special outfit or new custom cushions or new bed coverings or best of all when they wanted me to teach them how to make those items themselves. I’ve been very lucky to work with individual clients as well as designers, turning their visions into one-of-a kind finished products.
Sewing can offer such a unique sense of accomplishment- I love to see ones face light up when they say, “I made it myself”. As sewing is rarely taught in school today, generations are growing up without this valuable skill. Meanwhile, the popularity of shows like Project Runway prove that people want to be able to express their individuality and also appreciate it in others. I licensed with Kids Can Sew & Fashion Design in 2010 and Just Keep Sewing was born. I've been very blessed that after the initial year, all my advertising has been word of mouth. The comment I got most often from parents and grandparents was, "I wish my niece or other granddaughter/grandson lived closer and could come to your classes." So from this inspiration, myself and two partners, Jen Dulyanai and Bobbi Bullard, created the Kids Sewing Studio line of patterns and DVD instruction videos. Starting in 2015, children coming to lessons in my home classroom will use our line of fashionable patterns. Students who do not have access to a local sewing teacher, can now bring the Kids Sewing Studio to themselves with our DVD's or online streaming. Visit: kidssewingstudio.com for the pattern line with videos.
I am incredibly excited to share my passion for sewing with another generation of eager and creative sewists.
